Teaser Tuesday: 89.5FM KPOO

Every Tuesday, a Teaser of a photo is posted on the IAmMyCitySF social media accounts.  The users get a chance to guess what appears in the actual photo and the first people to guess are announced during the reveal on on the blog post at iammycitysf.com.

The Teaser...

It's Election Day in America and, well, the way I have felt for the past year about politics is pretty much summed up by the photo below.

No winners this week.

The Reveal:
89.5FM KPOO

I had just finished high school at SHCP and I was in my Freshman Year at USF.  I was (and still am) lucky enough to have a WONDERFUL big sister who, for the service of being an occasional chaufeer, bought me the car I really wanted, a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee.  As I sat in my 'new' car, I made the biggest, most important decision when it came to that new car....I selected my preset stations for the radio.

As I tried to think of a FM station to select for that LAST button, I searched and searched for something good.  That's when my dial arrived at 89.5FM.  There was some gritty sounding Hip Hop that I hadn't heard on ANY stations in SF.  "Hmmm...that's interesting," I thought.  I thought I'd give it a try.  Later that day, I thought, "I could go for some gritty hip hop right now," and hit #6 on my presets.  No gritty hip hop...it was something different.  That's when I discovered that this station IS SAN FRANCISCO, a station that represents the city with its diverse programing.

The station's tagline, Poor People's Radio.  "KPOO is an independent, listener-sponsored, noncommercial radio station" (kpoo.com).  Below is an excerpt from the About Us page on kpoo.com.

KPOO gives voice to the concerns of low income communities in San Francisco. Founded by Poor People’s Radio, Inc., KPOO’s ongoing mission has been to open the airwaves to the disenfranchised and underserved. Our station broadcasts news, public meetings, election, live events, interviews, public service announcements and music not heard on any other radio stations. As such, KPOO has continued to have a very loyal listening audience.
KPOO specializes in jazz, reggae, salsa, blues, gospel, and hip hop music. KPOO serves the Bay Area’s Latin community with several bilingual programs a week, and also produces programs concerning Irish Americans, Arab Americans, women issues and Native American concerns. KPOO broadcasts live the weekly meeting of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and non-stop election night coverage. KPOO also uses the airways to educate the community about important issues, including AIDS prevention, health concerns, use of the new technologies, prison affairs, and consumer protection.

Bravo KPOO.  Keep up the good work!
