Mural Monday: Stumbling Upon Art
A few weeks ago, I went to go shoot a mural on the corner of 7th Street and Brannan Street. My destination was the “Knowledge is Golden” mural I covered on Mural Monday a couple of weeks ago (click here to see that post).
I parked my car on Brannan Street and was walking to 7th Street to survey the area for the best angles to shoot. As i approached Oscar’s Photo Lab and Mars Bar and Restaurant, I looked toward my left, across the street.
I was surprised by the image of 2 women, one with a hood, looking down, her arms extended to her sides and the other, head looking down and away, chin to her shoulder.
This mural, on an exterior warehouse wall at 787 Brannan Street, was created by Yurik Riegel. According to Riegel, the people who lived in the building were not fans of the mural that lived on this wall before Riegal’s mural (www.yurikriegel.com)
The fact that I stumbled upon this great piece of work while heading to shoot another proves that artwork is all throughout The City. The other thing I noticed, in addition to how much art lives in San Francisco, is how much we take it for granted. The one thing I’ve noticed while going out for shoots is that it’s very rare that you see people stop and admire these elaborate masterpieces. In this day and age of ‘go go go’ and people walking with their heads down looking at their smartphones, we forget that art surrounds us and all we need to do enjoy it and appreciate it…LOOK UP!
