Sunroof Sunday: San Francisco Federal Building
The San Francisco Federal Building, located at 90 7th Street is a unique structure built in 2007.
Designed by Thomas Mayne of Morphosis, this 18 story building uses its special design for practical uses. The orientation and shape of the building, "maximize natural airflow for cooling and ventilation and take advantage of natural daylight for the majority of office interiors." (http://www.gsa.gov/).
A special feature of the building lays within the elevators. According to Wikipedia, some of the elevators stop at every 3rd floor. This is to promote "employee interaction and health," making it so the employees, when exiting the elevators, have to walk up or down a flight of stairs to get to their destination. However, employees that aren't too keen on this health promoting feature (or those employees who are unable to take the stairs) have another option, as there are good, old fashion elevators that stop at every floor, no matter how boring that might be.
The San Francisco Federal Building won The Outstanding Building of the Year® (TOBY) – International Award, Federal Building Category – in 2011
