Where's It From Wednesday: The Mission Bell Guidepost
THE MISSION BELL GUIDEPOST OUTSIDE OF MISSION DOLORES CHURCH:
In 1906, it was decided to place Mission Bell Guideposts along the great El Camino Real (the “Kings Highway”) and the first bell was placed in LA,. The bells were inscribed, “1769 - 1906,” marking the year of the 1st Mission and the year of the 1st Bell. As of 1913, total of 450 bells were hung on supports in the form of an 11 foot high shepherd’s crook, also known as “a Franciscan walking stick.” Bells were placed outside of each California Mission, selected historical landmarks, and the others were placed throughout the El Camino Highway.
Unfortunately, many of the bells were lost due to theft, vandalism or lost during road construction. However, over the years, California Bell Company, and Keith Robinson, Principal Landscape Architect of Caltrans, have teamed together and installed 555 original El Camino Real Bells along Highway 101, from LA to SF.
