Where's It From Wednesday: The Cliff House Timeline

The Cliff House has been a staple in San Francisco since the mid 1800's.  It also has had many different versions.  Below is a basic timeline of this beloved structure that lives on the EDGE

Cliff House Timeline:

 

• 1863 - First Cliff House built by C.C. Butler & John P. Buckley


• 1868 - The size of the Cliff House triples with the addition of 2 wings

 

• Dec 25, 1894 - The 1st Cliff House burns to the ground

 

• Jan 14, 1896 - 2nd Cliff House is built under the ownership of Adolph Sutro.  The new building is a Victorian structure that dwarfs the original design.

 

• Sept 7, 1907 -  The 2nd Cliff House burns to the ground 

 

• July 1, 1909 - New Cliff House opens for business under the ownership of Emma Sutro, Adolph Sutro’s daughter

 

 

• 1949 - The Cliff House is remodeled. 

 

•  1973 - The Blue Wave Cliff House
“ According to Mary Hountalas:  ‘The waves were put on the building probably in 1973 by a group knownas 'The We Four' who leased the bar on the north end of the building from George Whitney.’” (cliffhouseproject.com)

 

• 2003/2004 - Reconstruction of the Cliff House to its current form.
