Where's It From Wednesday: The Sutro Sights to See
“Where’s It From Wednesday’s” will be a weekly history lesson of San Francisco, told through historic photos and present day photos taken by me. Landmarks, monuments, street names, I’ll be answering the question….Where’s It From???
Todays, “Where’s It From Wednesday”…the Sutro’s of SF, including the Sutro Baths Ruins, Sutro Heights Park and Sutro Tower. All these fascinating places are named after Adolph Sutro. Sutro, educated as an engineer, was a successful business man, gaining his wealth from "de-watering and de-gassing the mine shafts of the Comstock Lode by driving a tunnel through Mount Davidson to drain the water" (Wikipedia).
He moved to San Francisco, where he increased his wealth with large real estate investments. An accomplished man, he became San Francisco's 24th Mayor, but the 1st German-American Jewish mayor.
The 'Sutro Locations' are some of my favorites within San Francisco, as many of them are surrounded by vast beauty and intricate history. There will be much more on I Am My City SF about Sutro, his life, and the locations that are marked with his name.
