The Reveal:
The Doggie Diner Head
For people from SanFrancisco, the Doggie Diner Head is as synonymous as the Golden Gate Bridge or the Transamerica Pyramid. If you are visiting San Francisco and drive down Sloat Blvd by the Zoo, you might think, “Why the hell is there a dog’s head with a chef’s hat and a bowtie in the middle of the road?!?!?” The Doggie Diner was a fast food chain in the Bay Area which started in the late 1940’s. The last Doggie Diners closed their doors for good in 1986. However, after the closing, the doggie head remained. Some of the other Doggie Diner Heads were sold off to private buyers. In 2001, the Doggie Diner Head was restored by the City of San Francisco and put on the median on Sloat Blvd. In 2006, it became a SF Landmark.
You might also see a group of 3 Doggie Diner Heads being driven around the Bay Area by John W. Law. I snapped this shot when I saw them driving across the Bay Bridge. What a sight that is!
